Dodds History
1882-1883
Alexander Dodds Buys into Machine Shop
In the mid-19th century, Alexander Dodds entered the manufacturing business in Grand Rapids by purchasing a half interest in a local machine shop owned by George Whittemore After just one year, Dodds bought out Whittemore’s remaining share and assumed full control of the operation. He then began producing woodworking machinery under his own name, establishing the firm Alexander Dodds which became part of Grand Rapids’ growing reputation as a center for furniture manufacturing and woodworking innovation.1887
Dodds Gang Dovetail Machine Patent
In June 1887, Alexander Dodds was granted a patent that would dramatically change the course of his company. The patent covered the first successful gang dovetail machine — a major breakthrough in woodworking technology. Before this invention, dovetail joints were cut individually, a time-consuming and highly skilled process. Dodds’ gang dovetail machine allowed multiple dovetails to be cut simultaneously with precision and uniformity. This innovation revolutionized the process, making it significantly faster and easier to produce clean, high-quality joints than ever before. The machine proved especially valuable in Grand Rapidswhere the booming furniture industry demanded efficient, repeatable production methods. By improving both speed and consistency, Dodds’ invention helped support the city’s rapid growth as a leading center of furniture manufacturing in the late nineteenth century.1907
Alexander Dodds Company
In 1907, the Alexander Dodds Company was officially incorporated, formalizing the business that Alexander Dodds had founded decades earlier. The company retained the founder’s name — a name it continues to operate under more than 115 years later. From its early breakthrough with the gang dovetail machine to the present day, the Alexander Dodds Company has remained focused on innovation in dovetailing technology. While manufacturing methods have evolved, the company continues to develop new dovetail machines, carrying forward the legacy and name that started it all.
